Work on the white marble Tower of Pisa began in 1173 and it was already leaning by the time the third floor was finished in 1178 as the clay soil wasn't firm enough to hold the 16,000 ton building. For 800 years, the tower fell by 0.078 inch per year and cement was pumped into the foundations in the 1920s to halt the shift.
